DAILY LENTEN READINGS

Lenten Invitation Lent is a season of waiting and preparation. It is also a time when we as the body of Christ remember the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus our Christ.

Lent should be a time of personal reflection and prayer. The 40 days of Lent remember the 40 days Jesus spent in the wilderness in prayer. These were also 40 days when He was tempted by Satan. The 40 days of lent extend to 47 when each of the 7 Sundays are included.

Your Disciple and Pastoral Team invite you to use days and the corresponding bible readings as a way to center your prayer, study and personal reflection.

If you have limited time, we recommend you begin reading one Psalm in the morning and one Psalm in the evening. Please use the above chart to help you. If your time is limited, you can skip the gospel reading. If you have more time, you can add the chapters from the gospel for the day. If you follow this plan you will read through the gospels which detail the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus.

The remaining Wednesdays in lent we invite you to join in a fast. Fasting is a way of abstaining from something (normally food) in order to dedicate your time and your body to the pursuit of God. If you have never fasted, consider abstaining from one thing. If you want to try a day fast from food each Wednesday, make sure you drink at least water or clear liquids. You can also choose to fast from food until sunset, eating one modest meal that night. Fasting should be done to deepen your focus on your spiritual growth, your commitment to pursuing God, and your availability to listen and hear God speak.

Holy Week Holy week is the week leading up to Jesus’ Crucifixion and Resurrection. This is the week in which he made his way into Jerusalem starting with the Palm Sunday entrance. Epworth will have 2 special services during Holy week – Holy Thursday and Good Friday. We invite you to join together in these special days. The gospel readings for Holy Week walk you through the last week of Jesus’ life on earth. You should read these first, then the Psalms if time permits.

We pray you find depth, power, rest, and wholeness in this period of reflection and pursuit of God. Scripture is the living word of God. He has promised the Word does not return empty. Fill your heart with His Word these coming days.
